Yesterday morning, it was like nothing was wrong. But that evening, the moment I opened it up, there was a white screen of unresponsiveness.
*panic*
With all the busy-ness of symposium work, committee exec work, and my own creative work over the last couple of weeks, I hadn't backed up anything for a while. Heck, even my resume had been updated since it was last backed-up.
Anyway, after a restless night's sleep, I was at the (only) accredited Mac service place in Darwin when it opened at 8:30am, handed my baby over, and spent the rest of the day suffering from separation anxiety.
However, there was some comfort in the knowledge that the (only) accredited Mac technician in Darwin was also a qualified library technician, who'd worked over at the Tamminmin Community Library when they only had an Apple 2E, and had worked with Apples ever since.
I got the call at lunchtime. It was the hard drive. It needed a new one.
Not. Happy. Jan.
However, it also made me aware of how much of my stuff I'd already inadventently "backed up" in one form or another through my constant use of the internet. I could find most of my "valuable" work through file attachments in correspondence, my Flickr account, and even on YouTube and MySpace. Thank goodness.
Oh well, this is the second time I've fallen victim to manufacturing faults with my MacBook. By the law of averages, this should mean that I'll never have a problem with it ever again.

That happened to mine too! Boo macbook. I didn't have the shutdown problem but I have had to have the battery and the dvd drive replaced as well :/
